FLAG

This painting is late! Being the 4th of July was last week. I wanted to have this done in time to post for the 4th. Last week,  I would come home from work every day with the intention to get this painting done in one or two sittings, and I was figuring that it would be a total of about five hours of work. This is short by normal standard of twenty  hours or so per painting. I always think I will get done quicker, but the kids, cleaning, dinner, and I guess life always seem to stall me.  When I think about it I am very lucky that I have these things in my life. Do they slow me down004 my painting production? Yes! I wouldn’t have it any other way. I will just have to work harder after everyone goes to bed :0)

Oil Pastels! What the hell are they???

Just what is an oil pastel? Many people probably have never heard of them, and even fewer people know what they are made of. Well oil pastels just happen to be my choice of medium  and  sometimes I wonder why I chose them, because they can certainly be a pain in the ass to use!

It seems they have been around for centuries and basically it was people using using colored wax sticks to draw on walls and such, there were later more modern versions, but they were considered more of a kids coloring tool. It wasn’t until Picasso wanted a professional version of well, crayons. I know! It makes me  feel so chidish that I use adult crayons to create art, but yes I am a big child :0).  Joking aside Picasso basically wanted professional quality “oil paint sticks” that he could whip out at a moments notice and make quality art without all the fuss of setting up oil paints.  So Voila he did it, with the help of the Sennelier family.  Oil pastels had officially become a “new medium”.

Oil pastels  are simple to use, but they are at the same time difficult to use, and yes they drive me crazy!!! This medium has such vibrant colors, but man does it take some time to get used to them. They are often described as painting with lipstick, and I guess in a way they are. They are very creamy and lay down smoothly, but they are very difficult to get fine details, and can be difficult to manipulate them to get the results that I like. There are a few different ways to make the oil pastels do what you want them to do, but I won’t bore you with details. I do use a number of different things to manipulate these products to get satisfactory results, but my strongest asset is that I cheat!. Thats right I said I cheat! I use oil paints in tandem with the oil pastels and it work very well. Some oil pastel purists might disagree, but I have the opinion that if it helps you to become a better artist than what the hell!

To the few  people that might read this blog at this time. I thank you very much! I am in the beginning stages of trying to build my art business and I am trying to connect with people and get started on my way.

Here are one of my originals that are for sale.

A New Biz? I’m going to damn try!!!

I have been posting my paintings on wordpress for a few years now and I usually just post the pics of my paintings to try and make an attempt to share them with fellow artsy people and art admirers. I mean I really love to paint and draw and I have beenat it   for about fifteen years or so. I mean I started fifteen years ago with some art book my wife picked up at a garage sale in bloomfield NJ, when me and wife still lived in our apartment. I remember she bought me this art book because I mentioned that I would like  to give drawing a try. So there it was the “art” book  sitting on dining room table and I just looked thinking it was so cool, and thinking to myself that I wanted to go out and buy more drawing books before I even started…lol.  I opened the book and found lessons for how to draw, how to see. My very first attempt at drawing was trying to draw an egg, and the book briefly described how I should begin. I did so bad, as you can imagine. I mean really bad. I still have them and I think that I will post them on here for everyone to see what happens when you work at something. Look I’m not saying I am this great artist ;), but I think that I am at least mediocre. So any way back to my very first drawing that really sucked! I tried to draw this damn egg from the lessons and did horribly and wanted to throw the book, the egg, and the drawing out the window in that small apartment in bloomfield NJ.  I didn’t, not sure that wasn’t a mistake, but I kept going. I kind of dabbled for the next five or six years before I started to take it more seriously.  The last nine to ten years really got into and tried to improve my skills and finally started painting a few years ago. I have never had any sort of education in art, or taken any classes. I have read alot and basically taught myself, and believe me I wish that i had some formal training, but of course that ever present money issue and time to do it has gotten in the way…:(.  So here I am after thinking it  over so many times,  about selling my  art work and trying to start a small(very small)business that involves selling painting and prints. I am of course skeptical, doubtful, and nervous. Regardless of how I feel about selling my art and trying to start a business. I am going to give it a go. I know it will take some time, but  I am not going to give up……….IMG_2724
